Udaya Narayana SINGH

 

Udaya Narayana SINGH currently holds a Professorial Chair at Rabindra Bhavana, Visva-Bharati. He was also the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati between Aug 20, 2010 and June 15, 2012. Until June 2009, Professor Singh was the Director of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore.

A renowned linguist as well as a reputed poet, playwright and essayist in Maithili and Bengali. And occasionally writing in Hindi, Singh had set up the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS), Centre for Distance Education and the Study India Program (SIP) at the University of Hyderabad, and has taught at the Universities of Delhi, Baroda and Surat. 

 

 

 

  

Rabindranath TAGORE

 

Venerated as a Poet and Writer who excelled in different genres, he was in fact an Educator pioneering a new school system, a Thinker, a Reformer and Revolutionary  as well as a world Traveller; a Painter as well as a political Activist; a land Reformer just as much as a highly rated Messenger between East and West.

Two of his poems have become national anthems (for India and Bangladesh), and the school and university he founded (Visva-Bharati) are still reputed institutions.

 

YAMADA Sôshô

 

The reverend Sôshô YAMADA is the 27th abbot of the Shinju-an temple founded by Ikkyu himself, belonging to the great temple Daitoku-ji, Kyoto, home of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. He leads the religious services of the Daitoku-ji teaching school. 

In his book Ikkyû, L'impertinence au service de la foi, Yamada offers the reader, along with a biography of Ikkyu, an annotated anthology of poems and koans written by this Zen master, illustrated through a rich iconography of hitherto unpublished photos, mostly taken by himself.

Carl Friedrich von WEIZSÄCKER

 

Carl Friedrich von WEIZSÄCKER (1912 – 2007) was a German physicist and philosopher. He was the longest-living member of the team which performed nuclear research in Germany during the Second World War. Weizsäcker made important theoretical discoveries regarding energy production in stars from nuclear fusion processes. He also did influential theoretical work on planetary formation in the early Solar System.

In his late career, he focussed more on philosophical and ethical issues, and was awarded several international honors for his work in these areas.
